Are these Swedish teens looking at more porn than you?
A new study has shown the porn watching habits of 16-year-olds in Sweden.
Public health researcher at Uppsala University Magdalena Mattebo was surprised at the quantity and frequency at which porn was consumed by the Swedish teenagers.
As reported by The Local, 1 in 3 admitted they watched more porn than they would like to while 1 in 10 said they watched it everyday. Referencing the differences between new and old studies, Mateebo explained to the TT news agency:
“I didn’t think it would be so many of them. My [doctoral] supervisor has done this type of research in the past but then the big consumers [of porn] were looking once a week.”
477 boys were interviewed for this latest study, all in their first year of high school in Uppsala, east Sweden. Researchers found that the boys who accessed large quantities of porn were more likely to report weight struggles, miss school, use tobacco products, and find difficulties making and keeping friends in real life.
The number of boys looking at porn hasn’t really changed, noted Mattebo, but rather the frequency at which they’re consuming it. According to the latest findings, visits to porn websites has increased.
“Previous generations had to go to the news agent and buy a magazine to get access to pornography, but nowadays it is just a click away.”
Mattebo noted that she would like to keep surveying the study group as they grow older as no previous generation has had such access to pornographic material that’s so readily available.
“It will be very interesting to see what happens with this group when they group up, to see if their behaviour stays the same.”
In contrast, of the 400 16-year-old girls that were also interviewed, 54% said they had watched porn at some point, while 30% said they had watched porn more than once. Mattebo noted that the way in which the girls consumed porn was much less intense than the way the boys consumed it.
